Switched DC-DC Voltage converter

In all circuits I need one or more regulated power supply. In general I used the 7805 and similar ic for power supply. Now I am working on a circuit where I will have mainly a 3V supply from 2 AA batteries and need also a 5V supply for a small part.

I run across the switching reulator MC34063 and it seems to be very cool. It can supply a wide range of volatge, so it might be a good replacement for the 78xx circuits.
